Located in the heart of the three main competition venues (Palau St. Jordi: Swimming and Synchro, Piscinas Picornell: Waterpolo, Piscinas Municipales: Diving), the Planet Water Village was a meeting point for the international aquatic sports community and its fans. With 200 countries participating in the World Championships the fan base was extremely international and the Planet Water Village welcomed visitors from all over the world.
But the Planet Water Village also was a “place to be” for national and international celebrities and VIPs. The Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, FINA President, Julio Magglione, the second ranked Spanish Synchronized Swimming team as well as His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, the famous Dutch swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband and the US swimming legend Michael Phelps, were some of the guests that the Planet Water Village was honored to welcome during the 15th FINA World Championships.
On the evening of August 2nd the whole Planet Water Village was infected by the flush of victory. After a sensational win against the Australian team, the Spanish female Waterpolo team, their 150 official guests and all the visitors of the Planet Water Village proudly celebrated the Spanish gold medal.
After the official celebration and reception at the Club Restaurant the whole team went on stage, accompanied by the sounds of “We are the Champions” to cheer their fans. We congratulate them on an extraordinary achievement!
